Can you hear me now?

For years, I’ve found myself recognizing major technological inflection points early — from Bulletin Board Systems to computer forensics, Bitcoin, cloud, and infrastructure-as-code. In late 2025, I felt that same shift again as AI-driven software development crossed a structural threshold. This is no longer about AI assisting humans; it’s about AI becoming the primary executor of digital systems, with humans redefining their role around intent, constraints, and orchestration. The leverage model is flipping. This transition will bring turbulence — organizational resets, economic compression, and identity friction — but it will also unlock unprecedented creative and architectural freedom for those willing to adapt. The shift isn’t theoretical. It’s happening now.

For most of my career, I’ve had a habit of seeing shifts a little early.

Not perfectly.
Not precisely on timing.
But directionally — early.

I was on Bulletin Board Systems before the public internet arrived.

I started a computer forensics firm before “computer forensics firm” was a recognized category.

I mined my first Bitcoin within a year of its release.

Later, I leaned into cloud before it was default.
Containers before they were boring.
Infrastructure-as-code before it was expected.

I’m not claiming clairvoyance.

But I’ve learned to recognize inflection points.

And two to three months ago, I felt it again.


This One Is Different

As AI-driven software development capabilities accelerated late last year, I started saying it out loud:

This is coming faster than people think.
And it’s going to be more disruptive than most are prepared for.

At the time, I was in a startup environment with business-oriented rather than technical leadership. The executives didn’t want to hear it. There wasn’t much appetite for rethinking structural assumptions.

A handful of developers heard me and listened intently.

But broadly, the industry was still framing AI as a helpful assistant.

That framing is already outdated.


The Comfortable Narrative: “AI Will Help Me”

Most smart, highly technical people I respect were saying things like:

  • It will help me write code faster.
  • It will automate repetitive tasks.
  • It’s a productivity multiplier.
  • It’s Copilot, but better.

That’s the comfortable version.

The uncomfortable version is this:

The leverage is flipping.

We are not moving toward:

Humans assisted by AI.

We are moving toward:

AI systems executing — with humans supervising, guiding, constraining, and defining intent.

That’s not incremental.

That’s structural.

And in the last few weeks, I’m starting to see the shift in tone.

Senior engineers admitting that velocity curves are bending.
Founders quietly recalculating staffing assumptions.
Online forums where the anxiety is no longer theoretical.

The alarm is just beginning to sound for the deeply technical.

So I’ll ask it plainly:

Can you hear me now?


This Is Not Another Tooling Upgrade

We are watching AI:

  • Generate architecture.
  • Write production-grade systems.
  • Refactor its own output.
  • Analyze requirements and propose system designs.
  • Orchestrate infrastructure changes.

Not as a novelty.

As a baseline.

The question has already shifted from:

“Can it write code?”

to:

“How much human involvement is actually required?”

That’s not a tooling conversation.

That’s a professional identity conversation.


Humans Are Being Repositioned

Some interpret this shift as dystopian.

Some see it as the erosion of craftsmanship.

Some see it as automation creeping into meaning itself.

I don’t.

I see a repositioning.

We are moving from:

  • Implementers
    to:
  • Intent definers
  • Constraint architects
  • System stewards
  • Orchestrators

The mechanical translation layer — the repetitive, boilerplate, middle-band execution — is collapsing.

Yes, there will be turbulence.

  • Engineering org structures will compress.
  • Compensation models will reset.
  • Consulting economics will change.
  • Ego will take hits.

But the creative surface area expands dramatically.

Smaller teams will build larger systems.
Architectural altitude becomes daily work.
Experimentation cycles compress from weeks to hours.

This isn’t the end of engineers.

It’s the end of engineers as code typists.


February 2026: The Curve Is Visible

Two or three months ago, it felt like a tremor.

Now the snowball is visibly rolling downhill.

Model improvements are stacking faster.
AI-native workflows are emerging organically.
The people who dismissed it as incremental are recalculating.

This is not five years away.

It’s not even two.

It’s unfolding in real time.

The people who release their grip on “how it used to work” — and instead design for this new leverage model — will lead the next phase.

The people who cling to the previous abstraction will feel disoriented.


An Addendum: Why I’m Building Xyn

I don’t write this as an observer.

I’m building into this shift.

My work on Xyn is based on a simple assumption:

AI is no longer just a helper inside a workflow.

It is becoming a primary executor inside systems.

That changes how we design platforms.
How we define blueprints.
How we think about orchestration.
How we structure releases and operations.

Xyn isn’t a reaction to AI hype.

It’s an attempt to design for a world where AI-native execution is assumed — and humans operate at the level of intent and governance.

I’m not interested in debating whether this shift is coming.

I’m interested in building for it.
